Getting it right for every child (GIRFEC)

‘Children are one third of our population and all of our future.’

In North Ayrshire we are progressing Getting it Right for every Child (GIRFEC), a national approach in Scotland to improving outcomes and supporting the wellbeing of children and young people by identifying the right help at the right time from the right people.

GIRFEC puts children’s rights at the heart of the services that support them – such as early years services, schools, and health and social care – ensuring that everyone works together to improve children and young people’s outcomes.

In the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014 some components of GIRFEC have been put into legislation, such as the Named Person, Child’s Plan and wellbeing.  The concept for the named person is to have a central point of contact for a child or young person when support is needed. This person would be from our Universal Early Years’ service (if under 5 years of age) or Education (if over 5).

The GIRFEC parts of the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014 will not come into force until later in 2018 or perhaps 2019 but we are making named persons available to all those that need them and we continue to progress other areas of GIRFEC.
